Understanding Breast Cancer
Aim of activity
Task 1: The aim of this activity is to teach students about various topics on breast cancer. The Jigsaw teaching strategy is an effective method for students to learn large amounts of content in a self-directed way.
Students are put into groups of four. Each student from the group is given a fact sheet on one of the four topics, where they will become ‘experts’ on the topic by reading and summarising the information.
The four fact sheets are:
• What is breast cancer?
• Detection of breast cancer
• Breast cancer risk factors & risk reduction
• Breast cancer in Australia
The students will then share the information with their group, teaching the other three students about what they have learnt.
Task 2: To complete the activity, there are also some questions that can be given to the students to ensure that they have understood and learnt about all four topics.
Suggested teaching strategies
• Jigsaw
• Questions
Resources
The four fact sheets provide useful background information for teachers, as well as being the student resource for Task 1.
