Breast Care Nurse

McGrath FoundationThe McGrath Foundation

The McGrath Foundation was co-founded by Jane McGrath, with her husband cricketer Glen McGrath, after her initial recovery from breast cancer. During her experience she came to realise that the role of a Breast Care Nurse was an important one, both during and after treatment. However, she also realised that three-quarters of all breast cancer patients in Australia had limited or no access to such a nurse.

The McGrath Foundation raises funds to help train and employ Breast Care Nurses throughout Australia, and with the help of their funding, the Breast Cancer Foundation of Western Australia is able to employ a part time Breast Care Nurse.

Sherryl PottsBreast Care Nurse – Sherryl Potts

”I have been a Registered Nurse for many years. I have worked in the private and public sectors, in hospitals, in the community and in the mining industry in four states of Australia and overseas, in cities and rural and remote locations… I see an increasing need for care and support in the community as a result of the modern health care practice of early discharge and very short hospital stays, and a very real role for Breast Care Nurses in this setting.”

The role of the Breast Care Nurse is perhaps a little different from some other breast care nurses, but it is first and foremost to provide care and support for those affected by breast cancer. This includes women and men who have been diagnosed with breast cancer and those close to them. Sherryl is also involved in developing educational resources and information sessions for Foundation staff and the general public, receiving applications for financial support and co-ordinating the Foundation’s Breast Cancer Support Groups.

Please contact Sherryl for advice, information or just a listening ear.
